It’s easy to move through the day already thinking about the next thing. The email that needs a response, the thing you should be doing, the conversation you’re replaying, the version of your life you’re trying to get to.

Sometimes I need to remind myself that my life is also the moment I’m in right now.

A small practice I’ve been coming back to is simply noticing.

Put your phone down. Let your eyes soften. Take one slow breath in, and an even slower breath out.

Then notice five things around you.

The light in the room.A sound you hadn’t been paying attention to.The temperature of the air on your skin.Where your body is making contact with the chair or floor.Something that feels beautiful, comforting, or interesting.

You don’t need to make the moment better. You don’t need to feel peaceful. Just notice what is already here.

Then ask yourself:

What am I feeling right now, before I try to change it?

Where do I feel that in my body?

What has been taking up more space in my mind than I realized?

What can I put down, even just for today?

What feels good, beautiful, or alive in my life right now?

What do I actually need in this moment?

Take one more breath before moving on.

Presence doesn’t always have to be a meditation or a ritual. Sometimes it’s just returning to the life

that is already happening around you.
